Locum GPs

We also utilise a small number of locum GPs who help cover holidays and sickness. The locum GPs we book are always of a high standard, so you can expect to receive the same high level of care as you would from one of our regular GPs.

Nursing Team

The Nurses of Cerne Abbas Surgery work across the boundaries of Practice and Community in order to deliver a seamless nursing service to the practice population. The team works 8.30am to 5pm. The nurses have various general practice and community nursing skills. Some nurses specialise in various chronic disease management and run nurse led clinics. The nursing team also mentors and supports pre-registration nursing students from Bournemouth University. Val, our Care Co-Ordinator, and Norma, our Social Prescriber also work closely with the Integrated Nursing Team.

Community Midwives

Hospital and community midwives have been specially trained to care for mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, labour and birth. Community midwives continue to care for you and your baby for between 10 and 28 days after the birth. A Midwife clinic is held at Dorset County Hospital.

Health Visitors

Your health visitor takes over your care from the midwife. She is fully qualified nurse who has had extra training in caring for people in the community. Her role is to help families, especially those with young children, to keep healthy. Helen, our regular Health Visitor, provides support from the surgery.

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapists are specially trained and regulated professionals who consider the body as a whole, rather than just focusing on the individual aspects of an injury or illness. physiotherapists can give general advice about things that can affect your daily lives, such as posture and correct lifting or carrying techniques to help prevent injuries. Exercises may be recommended to improve your general health and mobility, and to strengthen specific parts of your body. Physiotherapists may also use their hands to help relieve pain and stiffness, and to encourage better movement of the body. Referrals to the Physiotherapy department can be made by Chris, our First Contact Physiotherapist, who visits every Friday, or your GP.

Podiatry

Podiatrists are healthcare professionals who have been trained to diagnose and treat abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They also prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections. They can give you and your family advice on how to look after your feet and what type of shoes to wear. They can also treat and alleviate day-to-day foot problems. Sandra, our regular Podiatrist provides a clinic every other Tuesday. She provides a private service. Every other Tuesday Jackie provides a toenail cutting and care service at the surgery. Our NHS Podiatry service is provided by Dorset HealthCare.
